Monday: A Setback Does Not Tell the Whole Story

By SeeMyChurch Editorial · Sunday, 11 October 2026 · 3 min read

A setback can make the future feel suddenly smaller. A plan changes, an opportunity closes or a conversation ends differently from what we expected. In the first shock, it is easy to treat the event as a complete explanation of what life will become.

In Setbacks and the Doorway to Mercy, Pastor Poju Oyemade reflects on difficult turns in a journey and the need to remain open to God. This original study begins with a careful distinction: a setback is real, but it may not be the whole story.

Describe what happened accurately

Read Genesis 39:19–23. Joseph’s circumstances are painful and unjust. The passage does not require us to call the injustice good in order to recognise God’s presence within a difficult season.

Write down the event that has disappointed you. Keep the description separate from the conclusion you have drawn about your future. An application was rejected is a fact. Nothing worthwhile will ever happen is a much larger claim.

This distinction does not remove grief. It creates room to grieve the actual loss without adding a prediction that cannot yet be known. Accurate language can help us think and seek support more clearly.

Allow the first response to settle

You may need time before making a major decision. When emotions are intense, a pause can protect you from an action that creates another problem. Where possible, delay an irreversible response until you have slept, gathered information and spoken with someone trustworthy.

If the situation involves immediate danger, safety comes first. Seeking help, leaving an unsafe setting or reporting wrongdoing may be necessary. Remaining open to God does not mean remaining available to harm.

For a disappointment that is not an emergency, choose one stabilising action. Eat, rest, speak with a friend or organise the information you have. These ordinary acts can support the clarity needed for the next step.

Ask what remains possible

List what the event has changed and what it has not changed. A closed opportunity may affect a plan without removing every skill, relationship or resource you have. Seeing what remains can make the next response more practical.

Consider whether there is something to learn. You may need feedback, a different approach or a revised timeline. Learning is not the same as blaming yourself for everything that happened. Some circumstances remain outside your control.

Bring the uncertainty into prayer. Ask for wisdom about the response, courage for the necessary action and care for the pain that cannot be solved immediately. You do not need to know the ending before you can pray honestly.

Take one proportionate step

Choose an action that fits what you currently know. Ask a clear question, seek advice or prepare an alternative. Avoid making a dramatic promise simply to escape the discomfort of not knowing.

Keep a brief record of what you learn. Over time, new information may change the way the event looks. A written note can help you see development that is hard to notice while you are living through it.

Do not pressure yourself to find a hidden benefit immediately. Some losses remain losses, and some questions take time. Hope can exist alongside unfinished understanding.

Tonight, name one source of support and one next step. Let those be enough for today. A life can continue through a series of faithful responses even when the larger path is not yet visible.

Reflect: What happened, what am I assuming and what remains possible?

Prayer: Father, meet me in disappointment. Help me face the loss honestly, receive support and take a wise next step without deciding that this moment tells the whole story. Amen.
